Wyze replaces free cloud recording with a limited “Cam Plus Lite” plan
The Wyze Cam was a hit when it was first released in 2017, thanks to its low price and ability to record both locally and in the cloud. Wyze has introduced several other security cameras since then, and the paid subscription options have changed a few times as well. Now the company is changing its cloud recording plans again, with a new “Cam Plus Lite” option to replace the current free cloud recordings.
Wyze announced in a message on the forum“Check out Cam Plus Lite, a service that gives you 12-second event recordings and Wyze person detection at the price you choose, including $0. Cam Plus Lite gives you Wyze person detection and videos 12 second event video as often as every 5 minutes, recorded in the cloud for 14 days This will allow you to receive and filter motion event videos with people to ensure that the notifications you receive are This will apply to our current range of Wyze Cam models, regardless of how many of these devices you have on your account – now or in the future.
Cam Plus Lite provides 15-second cloud recordings instead of the 12-second recordings on the existing free recording plan, but it also limits cloud recordings to person detection only. Anything not detected as a person will be saved to the cloud as a thumbnail only. Update: wyze said XDA Developers this person detection is not required to trigger event video recordings with Cam Plus Lite or any Cam Plus plan. Motion events and sound events will still record video.

The change is a bit confusing, in part because Wyze itself is still experimenting with its plans – the company says so almost went bankrupt in 2020, and attempts to strike a balance between profitability and buyer satisfaction. Wyze too did not decide whether future cameras will have Cam Plus Lite as an option.
On the plus side, local recording is also improving. Wyze said, “We have just licensed an exFAT patent and will officially support microSDXC cards larger than 32GB! This is already included in the latest Wyze Cam v3 firmware and will be available on the rest of our cameras in their upcoming firmware updates. The app will also be updated with rewind and 30-second forward buttons when viewing local recordings “by mid-February”.
Wyze also says it will shut down cloud recordings for anyone who doesn’t upgrade to Cam Plus Lite (or one of the paid subscriptions) starting Feb. 15. Wyze device owners can upgrade to Cam Plus Lite on any date, but after this February deadline, you won’t get new cloud recordings. This apparently means free cloud recordings are gone entirely for the original Wyze Cam, since Cam v1 is not listed as a supported device for the new Cam Plus Lite.
