The webcam on an old PC with Windows 11 is not working? Here are some fixes

Like all parts of your PC, a webcam can also experience issues at some point. Not only can this apply to the built-in camera, but users may also have some issues with the external camera. In this case, it clearly means that the PC software is not able to read the camera. It may happen that the software does not understand the connected camera or does not have the correct authorization enabled which effectively blocks the camera. Here are some solutions to fix the webcam if it is not working in Windows 11:

The following troubleshooting steps will guide you and help you understand the fault. Make sure to test the webcam after each step.

Step 1: Open the camera manufacturer’s website and check if it is compatible with Windows 11 operating system, as older cameras usually don’t work with newer versions of Windows.

2nd step: Restarting the system often fixes the problem, but don’t think of it as the solution to the problem. There may be an app or a browser using your camera. Restarting ensures that the system is disconnected from these sources.

Step 3: If your webcam is attached to the cord, be sure to unplug it and plug it back in.

Step 4: Try to temporarily disable antivirus, privacy software, and firewall. There are times when some programs have built-in webcam protection that could block the camera.

Step 5: Try to enable or disable the camera through the device manager.

Step 6: Uninstall the camera using “Device Manager” which will force Windows to reinstall the driver. Once you are done, restart your computer.

Step 7: Try running a driver update tool that will help you check for missing or outdated drivers, to install them for you.

Step 8: Make sure the webcam software is up to date. There might be a dedicated app for this from the camera company like Zoom and Skype.

Step 9: Try to run Windows Update, Microsoft may have a fix for the webcam problem.

Step 10: Try connecting the webcam to other computers. If it works there, it’s possible your system needs a fix, but if it doesn’t, it’s likely your webcam is damaged.
