First impression – small
A webcam is a webcam is a webcam. But the Poly P5 is much more in some critical respects.
First, the F/2.0, electronic pan, tilt and zoom (EPTZ), 80° FOV lens and Autofocus sensor are unusual for webcams. Most are fixed focus and don’t offer PTZ.
Second, it has a visible privacy shutter with a prominent LED fin on top and a red shutter. You will not forget to twist it in private mode.
Third, it has a USB-A passthrough port, which means you can plug your headphones into it instead of taking up valuable port on the PC.
Fourth, it’s much smaller than it looks in the photos – 37.7 W x 34 H x 62 D (mm) x 68 g plus clamp.
Finally, it is professional quality and built to last.
USB-A cable – why?
USB-connected headsets/mics and cameras work first time, every time. I can’t tell you the number of times a Bluetooth headset/mic has lost contact during a videoconference.
The USB-A passthrough port is a sign of good design and usability – that alone might be the saving grace if you have limited ports.
Use either the folding monitor mount or the ¼” tripod screw connector underneath (very few webcams have a tripod mount).
Professional quality – why?
There are a million cheap 720p, 1080p, 2K, and 4K webcams out there, and without fail, most use a cheap, dumb CMOS sensor.

You look and sound better.
Poly has a physical camera shutter (rotate the bezel) and an indicator light when the camera is active. Plus, a physical shutter means you can activate the picture only when you need it – otherwise the caller will see the background you’ve chosen.
Poly Lens app
You don’t need Poly Lens App for Windows or macOS to use the device, but it allows firmware updates, room configuration, ePTZ, best camera placement, management of your Blackwire headset and more. Consumers do not need to create an account to use it.
Firmware updates are essential as Poly regularly refines its devices for new video and communication applications.
If you manage a fleet of Poly UC cameras and headsets, you can use Poly lens – a cloud-based integration and management device.
Blackwire 3325 Stereo Headphones
It is an over-ear that exerts very light clamping pressure for all-day comfort. It has a 3.5mm 3-pole jack and a USB DAC (digital analog converter) with pre-programmed Microsoft Teams functions – volume, launch, presence, etc.
The noise-canceling mic has a frequency response of 100Hz to 10kHz and is excellent. It is on a boom that swivels 180° for left or right hand use
It’s quite clever – when receiving music it presents as a stereo device and full 20Hz-20kHz. When used as a “telephony” device on Teams, it adjusts from 1 to 6.8 kHz for clear voice. There are volume guarantees.
On the sound side – it is quite neutral for easy listening to most musical genres. Pleasant rather than exceptional.
CyberShack’s take – the Poly Studio P5 webcam is the best tool for the job
Always use the right tool for the job. The BlackWire over-ear headphones are exceptionally comfortable. Camera quality is excellent without resorting to 2/4K for detail – it shows what good optics can achieve.
It’s a huge step up from a 720p webcam – you can hear and see things you’ve been missing.
As a mainstream device, the price is fair for what you get. Let’s say that after almost two weeks of use, we really don’t want to use anything else.
As a professional-grade device, this is a great combo for staff. The build quality and longevity far outweigh the price.
